1. What is the name of the artist and artwork? And when and where was this
artwork created? Find out and write a short (1-2 paragraphs) bio of the artist.
The Love Bird Catcher is an oil painting created by French artist François Boucher (17031770) circa 1731-33 (Stein). Starting as an illustrator and printmaker, Boucher worked with every medium and every artistic genre available at the time. Baroque artists, Venetian paintings, Italian countryside, and Dutch landscape served as a source for his inspiration. Having worked as an artist for thirty years and being a member of the Royal Academy, Boucher was
appointed director of the Academy and became the kings painter. As a personal painter of King Louis XV and his mistress, Madame de Pompadour, Boucher perfected the style of Rococo in his paintings characterized by idyllic landscapes in pastel colors and sentimental and erotic scenes.
In Bouchers artworks shepherdesses are dressed in delicate silk dresses, while cherubs are rosy-cheeked and supple-skinned. The Love Bird Catcher was created in 1731-1733, before Boucher was introduced at the Royal Academy. Thus, those were his formative years, when he was a fledging artist looking for elements of his own style. By that time, Boucher had been in the profession for only five years, as he started making etchings for Jean de Jullienne circa 1726-28. Therefore, this painting is done by a young artist. Boucher must have started the painting in Paris, when he returned from a trip to Italy and became interested in mythology.
2. What is/are the medium/media? How does this material affect the art work, and perhaps the intentions of the artist?
From gouache and pastel to polychrome porcelain paints, Boucher worked with a variety of media during his lifetime. The Love Bird Catcher is painted in oil on canvas. For Rococo painting, it was common to use oil-based pigment sticks to create wavy lines and pastel-looking soft colors. To achieve the effect of soft and tender surfaces, Boucher applied the pastel polychrome method by using several pigments for one element. Usually, artists would work with a canvas stretched taut over a wooden frame. After the artist applied all the paints and let them dry, they must cover them with several coats of varnish to create a glossy surface and prevent the painting from aging and cracking.
3. Name at least 5 major events or developments in history that occurred during the same time this artwork was created. How do you think this may have affected the artist and the artwork? Use as much room as you need.
4. List ALL the literal objects you see in the composition (trees, people, animals, shapes, mountains, etc.). Spend time looking at the painting. Tell me everything you see.
In The Love Bird Catcher, the mood is light and carefree. At the time, Bouchers artwork was in high demand as his conception and implementation of putti was striking and charming.
On the one hand, Boucher had a mastery to paint children in a realistic way. Through his skillful juxtaposing of colors, he creates a three-dimensional feel of the painting. The landscape looks airy and breathing, while the putti look alive with energy and action. On the other hand, Boucher added so many curls and curves and stylized the painting to such an extent that the painting looks like a carton to the modern audience. Thus, Boucher creates a mood of a carefree childhood or captivating mythology, where putti are engaged in their interesting activities under the gaze of the audience. The soft and warm colors support the illusion, making the putti a feast for hungry
for beauty eyes.
Part 2;1. Name two significant Art Elements and describe how the artist is using them. Please make bold the elements you choose… Be specific
Bouchers formal elements combine to create an elegant and playful rendering of a light-hearted subject matter. The curved lines of the putti, greenery, clouds, and stones fill the images with lightness and playfulness common for Rococo painting. Since the putti are mythological creatures, or probably simply due to the small-scale of the painting, the curved
lines make the landscape especially decorative. Boucher did not aim at naturalness or realism. He intended to entertain. As children nudes, the putti are not sensuous and do not invoke any erotic connotations, unlike Bouchers other subjects such as the languid Pompadour in The Toilet of Venus.
Boucher definitely uses dark shades of blue, green, and brown, but those colors are not dramatic, aggressive, or depressing. They act as a foil to light and warm colors. His use of pink, lavender, peach, yellow, and turquoise creates this distinct feel of the Rococo lightness and playful nudes. The dusky and velvety texture of the greenery and clouds reminds of textiles and tapestry Boucher would be later involved with. Meanwhile, the putti in the foreground have delicate porcelain skin and soft, silky hair. They look like little cuddly toys that the audience feel compelled to touch due to their softness and playfulness.
Given the asymmetry common for Rococo art, it can be seen both in the composition and shape, enhancing the decorative effect of the painting. The C-shaped line (turned like a waning
crescent of the moon) can be observed in the composition.
The first and most obvious effect Boucher tried to achieve is to demonstrate his skillfulness. While the blue and red cloths look like linen, and a piece of pink silk looks smooth and nice to touch, Boucher presents himself as an artist able to convey the feel of any texture.
However, Bouchers main goal is to create a pleasant-looking decorative painting that pleases the eye of an owner. With the greenery looking luscious and the putti looking charmingly plump, Boucher creates soft and delicate textures to achieve sensuality and an easygoing nature of his work. Skilled in the texture of flesh, Boucher depicts the putti as little sensuous individuals. In contrast to the Baroque, when artists were interested in serious subject matter linked to politics and raising socially important topics, Rococo artists lulled the public and themselves with complacency with the reigning monarch and were engaged in frivolous and light-hearted subjects. In this regard, textures support these general directions and contribute to the feelings of pleasure and joy.
