This film evokes various feelings, both as a nurse and as a moral person. Most of us have entered / will join the nursing profession in response to a call to look after our fellow people. For many of us, with an eager devotion, we believe that nursing is not just what we are, but who we are. We are guided by a moral compass based on knowledge of the right from the wrong and of the good from the bad.
Although we cannot comprehend how nurses at concentration camps could be complicit in their role as “doers” of euthanasia, it is curious how many of them believed murder was a valid part of their caring job. These ideas raise many problems, for which the solutions reflect your own systems of beliefs and values. Answer the following in your post forum:
Do you think these nurses were complicit from the beginning or were they engaged over time slowly, until it was easier to cross the line? How might a sense of power overcome their moral judgment once they crossed the line?
They were perhaps taught to feel that the health of the general population is more important than the health of the individual; but how can they justify their actions to benefit the many?
Were they following orders simply?
Were they motivated by thinking that if they refused they would lose their jobs, or perhaps even their lives?
Could they honestly have thought that they simply relieved the children of their agony and were therefore merciful in their actions?

Think about your own vulnerability to external pressures and influences if your moral position were threatened, would you speak up today?

Consider this from a power position you may have or may not have. Why is it necessary that we comprehend not only our moral position but watch our own response and the response of others in today’s complex health care setting?
