MONTAGE ACROSS THE ARTS
Essay style is to be FORMAL ANALYSIS of two films regarding montage in City Symphonies Choose two montage works for comparison one of which needs to be a film. (You are also free to choose works which are not on any of these lists so long as they can be discussed in terms of montage and one of them is a film.) For film, cultural, and literary pieces choose a part of it (couple of minutes/pages long). Compare the works according to their montage aspects: 1) types of elements used in montage (ready-made or not, type of ready-made, etc.), 2) the relationship between montage elements (spatial, temporal, graphic, diegetic, perceptual, etc.), and 3) the function of the juxtaposition of montage elements (what is the aesthetic, political, etc. goal of combining these elements). For the film work identify and discuss at least two contemporary sources (within 3 years of premiere in that country). Use existing readings and external sources as evidence in your discussion and argument. Listed/suggested City Symphony films (please choose any two to write comparison piece on) 1) Berlin: Sinfonie der Großstadt / Berlin: Symphony of a Great City (Walter Ruttmann, 1927, 62 min) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rG4_Rfx_Dlc&ab_channel=AVGSHOW 2) Chelovek s kino apparatom / Man with a Movie Camera (Dziga Vertov, 1929, 68 min) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3C-2RgK3WwA 3) Recommended Works to Analyse Folder Rien que les heures / Nothing but Time (Alberto Cavalcanti, 1926, 46 min) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG1aUJ8C7VA 4) Skyscraper Symphony (Robert Florey, 1929, 9 min) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhHEDvi58Is 5) Regen (Joris Ivens, 1929, 14 min) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqAbPwCjak4 6) Douro, Faina Fluvial / Labor on the Douro River (Manoel de Oliveira, 1931, 18 min) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AydVnMFosE Essential Readings Jacobs, Hielsher, Kinik, 2018, City Symphony Phenomenon (Introduction).pdf Recommended Readings Strathausen, 2003, Uncanny Spaces.PDF Need in average atleast 13 to 14 references I have also added some supplementary documents, to help with what is meant by formal analysis ADDITIONAL NOTES AND ADVICE ON ESSAY Here I want to write with general comments and some information about the last weeks. When it comes to the essay, there are couple of general remarks on how to improve things. First, there is no need for introductions you can dive straight into formal analysis after you tell me what is the sequence that you are looking at. Second, if analyzing film, talk as little as possible about the film in general and as much as possible about the specific shot sequence that you have chosen. Third it is better to choose a shorter sequence than a longer one so you can talk in more detail about the relations between specific shots. Fourth, do not forget to discuss ready-mades (whether there are any of them or not even if there are not). Fifth, also do not forget to discuss perceptual effects (disruption or not) and why there is disruption or not. Sixth, remember that almost all films that we discussed (minus Berlin Alexanderplatz, Berlin Symphony of a Great City, and Enthusiasm) are silent films so any discussion of sound is misplaced (whatever you hear on YouTube or elsewhere is not the original soundtrack). Seventh, if you are discussing some film/image/text that is not listed in the syllabus you need to provide me with a link to that work that can access (and English subtitles if its not in English). The final essay is for the most part repeat of the first essay but now in a comparative fashion. There is, however, an addition and that is the discussion of contemporary sources. Contemporary sources are meant as reviews that were written within 3 years of the premiere of that work in that country. We will discuss them and how to access them in Week 12. Paper format and referencing to be done in MHRA style, with footnotes (not in text citations) and also added bibliography
