Early Medieval Europe Assignment
Assignment: write a brief (400 to 500 words) paper on a single image from chapter 11 (“Early Medieval Europe”). This is not a research paper, and I’m not interested in learning more about the artist or the meaning of the work. Instead, I want you to look closely and visually investigate and breakdown this work. I want you to describe the work in terms of composition, color palette, content, technique, and so forth.
This class presupposes no art historical knowledge on your part, especially not in the first week. All I want from you is a visual description. Imagine, perhaps, that you’re a technical writer for a textbook for blind people or the visually impaired. You have to turn the image’s visual language into a written one, before you can begin to express any interpretations, and maybe even let the reader make their own interpretations. You’re giving an objective description of the work.
Example: The rock face upon which the painting can be found has a convex form. This curvature echoes the shape of the circular contour of the image painted on it. A bison is painted in red ochre, composed mostly of simple, linear elements.
Naturally, you don’t have to use these types of adjectives. But you get the point. Try and stay away from subjective terms like “beautiful”, as this is interpretation. If you want, after you’ve done the description, you can go ahead and add your interpretation. If you want, but that’s optional.
Please use the following format: Times New Roman font, size 12, double-spaced, and standard margin sizes
1-30 Annunciation to the Shepherds, folio in the Lectionary of Henry II, from Reichenau, Germany, 10021014. Tempera on vellum, 1! 5″ # 1! 1″. Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich. The full-page illuminations in the Lectionary of Henry II fuse elements of Late Antique landscapes, the Carolingian-Ottonian anecdotal narrative tradition, and the golden background of Byzantine art.
