Consider the following scenario.

SK, who was 61 years old at the time, went to the hospital with a terrible cold and was diagnosed with pneumonia. She became increasingly hot and short of breath after being admitted, but her family’s pleas for aid went unanswered. In fact, when her daughter went to the nurses’ station to seek assistance, she was unable to find anyone. The patient soon stopped breathing, and the family’s urgent and frantic calls for rescue were finally answered. Although SK was successfully resuscitated, he suffered brain damage as a result of the lack of oxygen. She couldn’t walk, communicate, or take care of herself.

Her assigned RN had not checked her frequently enough and did not monitor her oxygen level due to nurse understaffing in the hospital. On this unit, there were 41 other patients. Only three registered nurses were on duty, despite the hospital’s own staffing rules calling for five registered nurses and two licensed practical nurses. The hospital failed to satisfy its own staffing criteria 51 out of 59 days before to this occurrence, according to records for the unit in question.
