Memos: 1-2 page, single-spaced memos. Discuss?two readings in-depth, by connecting the readings to one another, to other class material and to your prior knowledge and experience with the subject matter. These memos will be a useful tool to develop ideas about central arguments, criticisms, points of comparison, clarity and confusion about the readings.
What your memo should include:
A summary of each text (no more than 1 paragraph, each):
o Your summary should answer the following questions: What are the?central ideas or concepts?discussed in the texts? If applicable: What is the research question and what are the research methods used by the author(s)? What are the important findings?
A paragraph or two about how the readings relate to each other:
? Do they raise similar points, do they disagree with each other, or do they shed light on different aspects of an issue or question? If they are talking about different things, what insight does bringing these readings together reveal?
A critical reflection on the findings from the readings:
o How did the author(s) further your understanding of campus mental health? What are the strengths and limitations of the texts or the studies? Did the author(s) omit important aspects, what are possible limitations of their research and/or argument? Why would it be important to consider these omitted arguments?
A connection between the readings and other materials (readings, class discussions, movies,?social media, TV, etc.):
o How do the readings speak to broader themes addressed in class, in other classes, or in materials you encountered outside the classroom (e.g. newspaper or magazine articles, movies/TV series, social media, etc.)?
A concluding idea or question that is on your mind after considering the readings together. For example,?what new insight are you are taking away from the readings? or what questions did the readings raise for you?? or are there any points that remain unclear or confusing after doing the readings?
Since you are only using course material for the memos, use in-text citations only. There is no need for a references page/bibliography.
Use the following readings only
Reading 1: Meldrums piece
Reading 2: Eisenbergs pieceOther materials: hooks self-esteem
??Tips for Success:
?The following tips will help ensure you are successful in developing and communicating your thoughts on the readings.
?
1. Check your memo for spelling errors, referencing rules, logic, flow, and clarity of writing.
2. Use active voice whenever possible. An example of a sentence in active voice would be “Goffman summarized observations on social exclusionary practices with his conceptualization of stigma” which lets us know which author is responsible for developing which ideas. In passive voice, the socially excluded help us understand the power of?stigma?to characterizing trajectories of social life, demonstrates we’re unclear which persons are being excluded by which others.
3. Support your ideas with evidence. Use examples from the readings or your prior knowledge to illustrate the points you are making. It is not sufficient to state that you agree or disagree with the author.
Use varied evidence for the strongest argument: A strong memo considers different types of evidence and different aspects of an argument (i.e different points of view). Ensure that you clearly and carefully make use of evidence in your memo.
Cite, cite, cite! Use APA citation style?(for the in-text citations) and be consistent throughout. If you need help on how to cite properly, use the Purdue Owl website:?https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/?(Links to an external site.).
